Advocacy
On this page I listed a few of the things I tend to advocate whenever I can, so be prepared
WebFS
The idea behind WebFS, the Web File System, is to define a uniform interface to data storage and bringing the data mobility and freedom of traditional storage to the emerging Internet storage. The essay in which I fully explain the WebFS vision is here. WebFS is now part of the Data Portability workgroup (see below). More information can be found on WebFileSystem.org.
RDF
RDF is an XML format for representing metadata about resources (in practice: URIs). In essence it is very simple, it is just a set of triples: (URI, property, value), but its power is immense. RDF is one of the building blocks of the Semantic Web.
Python
I’m a big fan of Python. Python is a simple, yet very powerful dynamic programming language. It was developed by a Dutch guy (Guido van Rossum), which should say enough.
OpenID
OpenID is an open standard for distributed sign-on. This means that you can create one account (in practice a URL) at any of the OpenID providers (such as MyOpenID) and use this information to authenticate on any website that supports OpenID. OpenID’s adoption is improving. Companies like Microsoft, AOL and Digg are already using it or planning to use it in the future.
DataPortability
I am a member of the Data Portability Workgroup.
DataPortability.org: “Standardized Data Portability is the next great frontier for the web. As users, our identity, photos, videos and other forms of personal data should be discoverable by, and shared between our chosen tools or vendors. We need a DHCP for Identity. A distributed File System for data. This page will list the standards and contributors who are making it happen.”
